An Open Letter to My Friends and Family This Valentine's Day

12:39

So, today is Valentine's Day and I thought I would write a little post about sharing the love this Valentine's Day, even if you are single or have a significant other. I have never been in a relationship on Valentine's Day and honestly, it's been such a relief. I don't really like it and honestly, it's just a made up day that is over-commercialised for the stores to get more £££. However, I am not trying to rain on anyone else's day, so if you want to enjoy it with your loved ones or partner then please do, I will be celebrating mine with my Mumma.

Valentine's Day is mainly focused on people who are in relationships, however, the day is all about the people you love, so let's not just limit it to relationships. My family and friends have shown me a lot more love and support over the years than any man has done, so far anyway. So, this is a little post dedicated to my friends and family who have been my rock over the past few years.

My Family.

My Mumma - To my Mumma, thank you. Even though I know you know how much I love you for giving me life, I don't think you can begin to truly understand how much I appreciate, respect and look up to you. There is absolutely no way that I tell you often enough. You have been my biggest and most dedicated fan since day one. You put up with my unpredictable, incomprehensible mood swings, and countered them with nothing but love and kindness. You have forgiven every bratty comment, every door slam, and eye roll.. thank you for not holding those years against me, and thank you for seeing the goodness in me when I didn't necessarily deserve it. You were my best friend throughout my first heartbreak and I've never found a more comforting shoulder to cry on. Thank you for reminding me that I deserve a love that is unfaltering. I'll never grow tired of your long hugs, back rubs and tea making and I know now that even on my saddest days I will never be truly alone.

Mum, you see the best in every person that you meet. You love our family wholeheartedly and I know that you would do anything and everything for all of us. You find the joy in the smallest of things, a dog, a bird's nest, a small blooming flower, a long walk or even just a day out. These small things help me to recognised the joy this world radiates. You are good, kind and gentle in every interaction you have with another person.

Thank you for (sneakily) becoming my very best friend, being my first (and daily) phone call, and being my biggest (and most caring) confidant. You answer your phone with the same enthusiasm every single time, whether it's my first or seventh call of the day. I am eternally grateful. Thank you for showing me right from wrong and for teaching me the value of respect not only for others, but for myself as well.

You have always pushed me to be the very best version of myself and to work for the things that I want, rather than to just expect them. Thank you for making me independent, and teaching me to not rely on anyone. Every single day I become more confident in myself. You always told me that the ability to be financially and emotionally stable on my own was imperative, I see now that you couldn't have been more correct. Thank you for passing down some of your best qualities. You taught me to fight for everything that I believe in and to never back down. Because of you, I am not afraid to stand up for what I believe in.

Thank you for always believing in me. There is nothing that I want more than to make you proud. Thank you for understanding when I just couldn't swing that one class, or when that exam didn't go as well as I had hoped. I will always be your little girl, no amount of growing will change that. Thank you for giving me an older brother who tortures and loves me just the same. He is by far one of the biggest pains but also one of my biggest supporters. Thank you for not giving up on me, especially during those early teen years. I hope to have half the perseverance you had. Thank you for keeping me grounded.

I love you, Mumma. You are my role model and even though I laughed at everyone who told me this would happen, you're my best friend. I got my independence and my sass from you, and I couldn't be more thankful. Sometimes, I know I get busy, but you are so appreciated. Certainly, I wouldn't be the woman I am today if it wasn't for you. So, thank you - for absolutely everything. You are my hero.

Auntie Ali - Thank you for being you, for being a second mum to me and always being there for me. You are like a mother to me because of your never-ending words of advice, encouragement and support. Thank you for being a huge role model and loving me no matter what. I wish I could repay you for everything that you have done for me but there is no possible way. You are one of my biggest supporters and are always encouraging me to follow my dream. You constantly remind me that when I get my psychology degree that you will be there cheering me on at graduation. I don't think I could have done the things I have done without your constant support.

I know that if I ever need someone to talk to, you are there. I feel comfortable sharing anything with you, and I know that you will give me the best advice. You understand my view but also the view of a parent.... a lethal combination! and though I might not always like what you have to say, I know that I have to listen to you, because you're always right. I don't say thank you nearly as much as I should do. So, thank you for all of the things you have done for me over the years and for the things that are yet to come. You are one of a kind, and I appreciate all that you do. Thank you for being the best auntie.

Lana, - You are the person that someone can only live without, if they have never lived with you before. You light up every room and lift up every single person around you. People need you. Because you will hold them while they cry, and then be ready to beat down the person that made them cry ten minutes later. You'll make them laugh even when they're sad and you will forgive them for what they said when they were mad. You believe in people even when they don't believe in themselves. You are there for them even when they haven't always been there for you. And you care for them before you even care for yourself. You get to know people all the way down to their very core, even when they are hard to get to know. You go to war for people that you love and do it without even thinking. I love you so much! Thank you for being my friend. Oh, and thank you for being my maid of honour. I know I won't need to ask you for a while yet, but you had to know it was coming right? Thank you for being the godmother to my future children, the sister to my family, and another daughter to my mum.

Adrianna, - Thank you for being my backbone, the peanut to my jam. Thank you for being the person I look up to. Thank you for being my inspiration to live my life to the fullest and to never give up on my dreams. Thank you for allowing me to vent and complain to you constantly. Thank you for always helping me through everything and guiding me in the right direction. You are the one who made me realise that I don't need to change for anyone and I know that no matter what, you will always, always be there for me. Thank you for letting me be the crazy aunt to your little boy, he has the best mother that anyone could ask for. I may not show how much you do mean to me but I know that I wouldn't be who I am today without you in my life. I love you & Cecil so much and I wouldn't have anyone else as my crazy, beautiful friend.

Jess, - Thank you for accepting me and loving me for who I am. This isn't easy. I can be stubborn, confusing, difficult but you love and accept me for me. You take the good with the bad, and whenever I question if I have any good left in me, you are always there to reassure me and show me that I do. Thank you for loving me in my dorky and difficult moments, moments where if the rest of the world saw them, they would probably walk away. Thank you for being understanding, sometimes when no-one else does. Because of you, this world seems like a little friendlier place, one I can see myself being a part of. Finally, thank you for being you. You are incredible, my dear. And I cannot wait to constantly remind your husband that he got crazy lucky. I love you very much.

This took a lot of time to write, mainly because I was doing it through tears of happiness and gratitude. I am so blessed to have such an amazing support system around me. My friends, my family. There are so many more people that I could include in this but I would be here forever and this post would be as long as a book haha. Happy Valentine's Day to you all. I love you all and hope you have an amazing day no matter what.
